The Epic Tale of “Menemen”: A Turkish Breakfast Hero. Act I: The Gatherings: On a peaceful wooden table overlooking a suspiciously beautiful garden, the heroes assemble. The olive oil stands tall like a Mediterranean king. The onions whisper nervously. The eggs remain dramatic and mysterious. The stage is set.

Ingredients

  • 2 2 noble onions (finely chopped)

  • 3–4 3–4 green peppers (sliced into cheerful little rings)

  • 1 1 generous jar of crushed preferably summer tomatoes (or 3–4 fresh, grated tomatoes)

  • 4 4 brave eggs

  • (optional) A handful of diced cheese (melty destiny cubes)

  • 3–4 3–4 tbsp olive oil

  • Generous salt

  • Chilli flakes (optional)

  • Freshly ground black pepper

Directions

  • Act II – The Sizzle Awakens: Heat a wide pan over medium flame. Add the olive oil. Watch it shimmer like it just got promoted. Toss in the chopped onions. They begin their transformation, from sharp and loud to soft and sweet. Stir occasionally. Let them sweat out their life regrets. When they turn translucent and slightly golden, they are ready.
  • Act III – The Pepper Rebellion: Add the green peppers. They jump into the pan like they own the place. Sauté together until the peppers soften but still keep a little bite. This is not pepper soup. We respect texture here.
  • Act IV – The Tomato Flood: Now comes the dramatic moment. Pour in the crushed tomatoes. Everything turns red. The kitchen smells like summer in the Aegean. Season with: Salt and black pepper. A generous pinch of chilli flakes, this is of course optional, but is a must from my perspective. Let it simmer gently for 8 – 10 minutes. You will know it’s ready when: The sauce thickens, the oil starts to slightly separate, you involuntarily say, “Ohhh yes.
  • Act V – The Egg Intervention: With your wooden spoon, create little wells in the tomato-pepper universe. Crack the eggs into those wells. Gently mix everything together for that classic, slightly scrambled consistency. Cook on low heat until eggs are just set but still soft. Do not overcook! This is menemen, not rubber therapy.
  • Act VI (optional) – The Cheese Finale: Sprinkle in the diced cheese. Watch it melt. Stretchy strands appear. This is the moment people “just happen” to enter the kitchen and ask, “Is it ready yet?” Yes. Yes it is! So turn off the heat!
  • Act VII – The Glorious Serving: Scoop into a bowl. Top with fresh parsley if you’re feeling cinematic. Serve immediately with: Fresh crusty bread. Possibly with a Turkish tea. Tear. Dip. Repeat
  • Definitely pride! Eat outside if possible. Let the garden witness your greatness!
  • Bonus Wisdom from the Menemen Council: No, we are not discussing “onion or no onion.” This version clearly believes in onions. It is for everyone. It is to be shared. It is best eaten hot. And it absolutely does not belong exclusively to “men & men.” Because Menemen is not about gender. It is about tomatoes, eggs, and happiness in a pan. And that is something humanity can all agree on!
