We know we had announced that “AI and dispute resolution” would be our overarching lunch bowl topic this year, and it is and will be, but some things are more important.
So join us for our 33rd lunch bowl on 24 February 2025, marking three years since Russia’s full-scale was on Ukraine.
Three years ago, a regular Arbitrattoria Lunch Bowl that was scheduled for 25 February 2022, became a platform for a Call to Action to support Ukraine. Within a day, 200 hundred lawyers from various countries signaled their willingness to support the people of Ukraine fleeing from the war with their pro bono advice. Having exceeded reach of 16 million, the so-called UFU Platform became a testament of what people united by a joint mission can achieve. Building on this experience, we would like to use this platform to a very timely and critical Call to Action – mobilizing the money of the aggressor for Ukraine’s recovery and compensation.
Following a brief update as to the work of the UFU Platform by Polina Lehman, Head of Legal Aid at the United For Ukraine Association, and a brief update on the status quo of the possibility to obtain compensation for war damages by Olga Hamama, Special Counsel at Clifford Chance, we will proceed to the main topic of the event:
Transfer of Russian Assets for Ukraine’s Recovery and Compensation – A Possible and Necessary Step! We are honored to welcome Yuliya Ziskina as our guest speaker. Yuliya is a Senior Legal Fellow at Razom for Ukraine and an attorney at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, specializing in financial enforcement and public international law. Yulia is the principal author of the New Lines Institute report, “Multilateral Asset Transfer: A Proposal for Ensuring Reparations to Ukraine”, one of the most influential analyses on the legal basis for transferring Russian state assets. Her work has shaped U.S. and Canadian legislation, and she has testified in Congress, published in Lawfare and The Hill, and spoken at the World Economic Forum in Davos and the Council of Europe on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Originally from Kyiv, Yuliya is based in Washington, D.C.
