This is certainly the Christmas message, but it is also fitting for Easter.

Which is why I drew this nearly 30 years ago, thinking that for once, I would draw a Christmas card that I could also use for Easter greetings.

Over the years, I have used it for many occasions. Most recently for an April Fools’ prank law firm Marc and I — just to be absolutely clear once again — did not actually found: Santa & Claus Associates.

I choose this drawing to highlight two guiding principles that are indispensable to me — in life, and in my work as counsel, arbitrator, and mediator:

Empathy and compassion.

They are not always easy. In fact, in the middle of a conflict, they can be quite demanding. Especially when positions harden, tones sharpen, and patience wears thin.

But these are precisely the moments when they matter most. Not only because they make things “nicer”. But because they create space where there would otherwise be resistance. And they allow conversations to continue where they might otherwise break off.

And, perhaps just as importantly:

They simply feel better than the alternatives.
