The Land of the Eternal Blue Sky

Undral Sukhbaatar is a Mongolian-qualified lawyer and currently a candidate of the International Dispute Resolution LL.M. program of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She graduated from the National University of Mongolia School of Law with a specialization in private law.

Before moving to Berlin to pursue her master’s degree, Undral worked as a legal consultant and was involved in major construction and investment projects. This included the New Ulaanbaatar International Airport, also referred to as Chinggis Khan International Airport in Töv province, as well as the Mongol Petroleum Refinery construction project in Sainshand, Dornogovi province.

Undral also participated in the development of several draft laws such as the open data law and the petroleum law. In the process, she obtained valuable insights on the inner workings of legislative procedures.

She speaks Mongolian, English, and a bit of Russian.

We look very much forward to working with Undral and have so many questions…

What was your first job?

My first job was as an assistant of a working group for a parliamentary election candidate. I was so excited about it, but ended up spending the entire month in a small room making millions of calls a day.

Breakfast or dinner?

Dinner, because I tend to skip breakfast sometimes.

What do you cook when you spontaneously have friends over for dinner?

I love making pasta. It is a dish that is hard to fail.

Mountains or Seaside?

I grew up surrounded by mountains and always wanted to live near the sea.

If you could meet someone famous, dead or alive, who would it be?

I have always wanted to work in the film industry. So Christopher Nolan or Hans Zimmer.

Which was your favorite place to live so far?

Berlin, except for the long gloomy season.

Digital or analogue?

I think digital would be more convenient

Sunset during summer.

Window or aisle seat?

Window seat – always. I will even fight for it.

Country you wish to visit?

Or maybe one of the African countries where I could watch animals in their natural habitat.

What song will always get you on the dancefloor?

90’s and 00’s hits. Something like “I wanna dance with somebody” by Whitney Houston.

Good advice you’ve received?

Have the courage to say, “my prices are based on my talent, not on your budget”.

Biggest pet peeve?

Seat kickers and meetings that should have been an e-mail.

Most played on your music playlist right now?

The Weeknd – Party Monster.

Favorite (public) holiday?

We do not “officially” celebrate Christmas in Mongolia, so my favorite holiday is probably New Year’s Eve.

Last new thing you learned?

I have just started German A1 class recently, where I have been learning new phrases every day. Like: “Entschuldigung, wie bitte?”.

Which movie can you watch over and over?

Jane Austen adaptations, or Sissi trilogy.

Three words to describe Berlin?

Cultural, bold, diverse.

Three words to describe your hometown Ulaanbaatar?
